"You don't think. You act!" Luthien said as I parried her sword. "You have to move your feet."

When our swords met I blocked hers, moving quickly on my feet. Well, as quickly as a Hobbit can, following her instructions.

"You have to be light and quick."

Afterwards I sat down on boulder near Aragorn watching Merry and Pippin practise. We had been travelling for days now and decided to stop to rest. Luthien, Aragorn and the other man who was named Boromir were giving us sword lessons. Sam and Frodo decided to sit it out.

"Move your feet!" Aragorn said suddenly.

Boromir then accidently caught Pippins hand with his sword. Pippin winced then dropped his sword and kicked Boromir. Then Merry and Pippin lunged at him, knocking him over. They all laughed as the played around.

I laughed at them but my attention was drawn away from them as everyone began to look at strange black cloud that was heading towards us.

"What is that?" Sam asked standing up.

"Nothing...it's just a wisp of a cloud." Gimli said.

"It's moving fast...against the wind." Boromir said worriedly.

"Crebain from Dunland!" Legolas said.

"Hide!" Aragorn ordered.

Quickly, everyone packed up everything. Kicked out the fire, grabbed our packs and divided under the shelter of the giant boulders that surrounded us. I dived down under a boulder and found Pippin. We waited for them to go.

"Spies of Saruman. The passage South is being watched." Gandalf said worriedly. "We must take the pass of Caradhras!"

We set off again and I saw that Pippin's hand was still bleeding. I pulled a handkerchief out of my pocket and gave it to him.

"Here," I wrapped it around his hand, "Don't want it to get infected."

Pippin smiled at me. "Thank you Daisy. It isn't bad…"

I wrapped my cardigan closer round me as we trudged through rock and snow. Frodo slipped and tumbled back in the snow. Aragorn helped him up but Frodo felt for the ring round his neck. Boromir had picked it up from the snow, looking at it almost as if he was entranced.

"It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing...such a little thing." Boromir.

"Boromir...give the ring to Frodo." Aragorn said quietly.

My eyes widened a bit as I saw Aragorn place his hand on his sword hilt. Was Boromir a fret to us?

"As you wish. I care not." Boromir handed it back and to Frodo and ruffled his hair.

My body was numb and my teeth chattered. I could hardly see as the snow had frozen my eyelashes. I numbly clung onto Bill's mane. Bill was the horse we used to carry most of our things. The elves were moving lightly on top of the snow ahead with Gandalf, Gimli was making his way through the snow even though he was buried to his waist in it, Aragorn was carrying Sam and Frodo, Boromir Merry and Pippin. Leaving me to ride on Bill, making the poor horse's journey even heavier.

Legolas was saying something up ahead but I couldn't hear him but I did hear Gandalf shouting over the blizzards wind.

"It's Saruman!" He cried.

Then I heard it. A voice in the wind.  Then the snow fell onto us, a layer of snow swallowing us into the mountains. All I saw was darkness as I weakly scrambled around, trying to reach the surface. Then a hand grabbed me and pulled me out of the snow. I looked up shivering and saw Boromir.

"T-thank y-you…" I whispered.

Boromir nodded at me and lifted me back up onto Bill. "We must get off the mountain! Make for the gap of Rohan and take the West road to my city!"

"The Gap of Rohan takes us too close to Isengard." Aragorn argued.

We cannot pass over the mountain. Let us go under it. Let us go through the mines of Moria." Gimli said his beard covered in snow.

"Let the Ring bearer decide." Gandalf said.

"We'll go through the mines." Frodo said shivering violently.

"So be it…"

*********************************************************************************

"It reads, 'The door of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter.'" Gandalf said.

We had arrived at the entrance to the mines. The moon had reappeared from hiding behind the clouds, illuminating the doorway, making it clearer to see the Elvish writing.

"What do you suppose that means?" Merry asked.

"It's quite simple. If you are a friend, speak the password and the doors will open." Gandalf said confidently and raised his arms. "Annon edhellen, edro hi ammen!"

Nothing.

Aragorn and Sam were un-saddling Bill.

"The mines are no place for a pony. Even one as brave as Bill." Aragorn said.

"Bye Bill…" I whispered.

"Don't worry Sam, Bill knows his way home." Aragorn said as Sam sadly said goodbye to Bill.

I was tossing stones into the lake outside of the mines entrance bored with Merry and Pippin. Pippin was about to toss another stone when Aragorn grabbed his arm.

"Do not disturb the water…" Aragorn said.

I dropped my stone, acting like I didn't have one. I heard Gandalf say something and the grinding noise of stone doors opening. I tapped Merry's arm and we headed over.

"So, master elf, you will enjoy the fabled hospitality of the dwarves; roaring fires, malt beer, red meat off the bone. This, my friend, is the home of my cousin, Balin...and they call this a Mine... A mine!" Gimli snorted.

"This is no mine…It's a tomb!" Boromir said grimly as Gandalf lit up his staff, lighting the way.

I recoiled backwards in horror to see that I was standing on rotten bones. Skeletons of dwarves surrounded us.

"Goblins!" Legolas said as he pulled an arrow out of a dwarf skeleton.

"We make for the Gap of Rohan. We should never have come here." Boromir said.

"Frodo!" I screamed as a large tentacle wrapped around his ankle, pulling him back towards the lake.

The hobbits of our group rushed forward, grabbing Frodo. Sam drew out his sword out and dropped it down on the creature's slimy limb, slicing the top of it off, freeing Frodo. The tentacle retreated back into the water but twenty more shot out, knocking us back. Aragorn and Legolas began to fight the beast, slicing its tentacles.

"Into the mines!" Gandalf shouted.

"Legolas!" Boromir shouted and the elf shot an arrow at the creature giving Aragorn a few vital second stop run into the minds with Frodo.

The creature had knocked its giant strong tentacles against the structure causing the entrance to cave in. We were stuck in the mines of Moria.

"We now have but one choice...we must face the long dark of Moria. Be on your guard...there are older and fouler things than the Orcs in the deep places of the world." Gandalf said gravely.
